The Power of Accountability

Spread the love

Every saturday me and my pal in London have an accountablilty call at 7am prompt. Yes – 7am, on a non work day. It takes anything up to an hour as usually both or just him, if I’m injured…again.. need to go to Park run at 9am.

We chat about how our weeks going/gone and what went well, what didn’t. It holds each other responsible for our actions, so that we’re not being dicks and wasting time, energy, money and efforts that don’t serve us. Its brutally honest and can be very frank and baring at times.

At the end of the call we set ourselves three goals for the week. A personal, a health and fitness and a work or financial target. If one of us states something way over whats acheivable or isn’t specific enough  then we pull each other up and demand something actually measurable and REAL.  “I want to run 3 times this week” Sounds great, but that could be 3 x 100metres. or 3 x 26 miles!

Recently we have slacked. Blamed holidays we’ve both took, work etc etc. So we both beat ourselves around the head and made sure it happened this week. It was pretty mindblowing.

Turns out reason my pal isn’t getting to bed before 12 is because those late nights at work til 7 or 8pm have become 10pm….unpaid!!!!  Wow!  He gives me focus on my own goals too.

This week we have set ourselves brutal accountability and we WILL both hit our end goals.  For him its

  • Bed by 12  – 5 nights with finishing work at 7pm
  • No e-commerce work on ebay this week to focus on his 100mile running race next saturday
  • At least one hour of Hindu tutoring from a paid Tutor
  • Read two chapters of his current book
  • Reach out to at least one friend or family member that is overdue a call or visit.

For me

  • Finish my new logo
  • Two daily marketing posts for Micky Pizza
  • At least one hour of French tutoring from a paid Tutor
  • Research other coaching businesses for structure and pricing.
  • 80 miles cycling between Monday and Saturdays call

This week needs some focus to hit these 5.  But when you have someone you don’t want to let down, it doesn’t end up as empty promises to yourself or hating yourself for not pulling your finger out. The greater the accountability, the more chance you will do it.

Try it – it works!

Thats my 12 mins. Goodnight.
